The first meeting of 2018 took place at the University of Dundee Dental School on 15th February to discuss current research activity and plan the future direction of research within the group. Following this meeting, a Research Day concentrating on two main research themes: Child Oral Health and Oral Cancer was arranged and held on Monday 29th May in the NES Postgraduate Dental Education Centre in Glasgow.

Group members and invited guests from the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and NES attended the Research Day. The morning discussion on Oral Cancer was led by Prof David Conway who presented a paper on Prevention and Early Detection of Oral Cavity Cancer. The group agreed to further explore potential collaborative projects on prevention in dental practice related to the Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) agenda.

In the afternoon session on Child Oral Health, Dr Al Ross gave a presentation on the project, A systems analysis of fluoride varnish application in general practice in Scotland: Using the functional resonance analysis method. The group plans to move forward with a follow-up project in this area developing and widening its collaborative research interests. The group has already had success under its Older Adult theme with the award from the Dunhill Medical Trust, Improving Systems of Care for the Older PErson (I-SCOPE).
