Biomedical Vacation Scholarships at the University of Glasgow - 2024


Through funding from the Wellcome Trust, the University of Glasgow is offering Biomedical Vacation Scholarships for undergraduate students over the summer of 2024. This scheme pro-vides an exciting opportunity for students to contribute to cutting edge research at University of Glasgow, acquire specific scientific skills, and consider future career paths beyond their first degree.


Students eligible to apply for this opportunity must be:

  • be enrolled in an undergraduate degree in science, maths, engineering or medicine AND,
  • be in 3rd year of study (Scotland) or 2nd year of study (England).

Please note that students INELIGIBLE for this opportunity are:

  • Students in their first or last years of study, 
  • have previously undertaken a vacation scholarship from Wellcome or another funding body, or have had any significant research experience, such as a supervised research project lasting more than 6 weeks,
  • have completed or are currently undertaking a one-year placement in research as part of their intercalated degree (e.g., a sandwich year), as they would have had the opportunity to undertake research before their scholarship period.
  • are a graduate-entry medical student or anyone else who has completed a previous undergraduate degree in a science-related subject, as they would have had an opportunity to apply during their first undergraduate degree,
  • are a student enrolled on a course outside the UK or the Republic of Ireland.


The University of Glasgow and Wellcome Trust are keen to recruit students from backgrounds under-represented in science and therefore, in line with University policy and Wellcome Trust guidelines, 50% of positions are ring-fenced for individuals who meet at least one of the following widening-participation criteria.

1. Identify as having a disability and are registered with home University's disabiity support team or equivalent, 

2. Are in receipt of enhanced maintenance support from relevant UK student finance agency to help with living costs during study,

3. Registered with your university’s widening participation team,

4. Meet criteria for an ethnic minority based on UK government criteria

5. Study at a non-Russell Group university 


Supervisors must sign off application form and complete section 2 with applicant.

Projects should have a biomedical based theme and be achievable within 4 to 8 weeks. Projects should also enable students to develop new skills and gain experience working with an academic research team. 

When completing the application form, please give details of the overall context of the project, its specific aims and the main methods that will be used. Projects should be feasible within an 8 week timeframe. Detail the arrangements for supervision (including day-to-day supervision if this will not be by the main supervisor), and briefly describe any other training experiences the student will have through this project in addition to practical work (e.g. participation in lab meetings, attendance at seminars, etc)).


Students are paid approx. £3,322 (for an 8 week project). Salary will be in line with UKRI guidance. 

Additional financial support may be available for additional travel or accommodation costs in circumstances in which financial issues would limit or prevent a successful student taking up the Scholarship.

The expected start for projects is Monday 3rd June 2024 but this is flexible and start date can be agreed with supervisors.
